Banned Books Week 2019: Celebrating the Freedom to Read

Today is the start of Banned Books Week 2019:

Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, BBW highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted banning of books across the United States.

We All Have Secrets

It was a pleasure to work with Florence Love Karsner on We All Have Secrets. Set on an island off the coast of Florida in 1962 as the Cuban Missile Crisis is heating up, We All Have Secrets finds Dr. Molly McCormick and her retired US Navy officer grandfather in the crosshairs of sumgglers who are using the island as a waypoint to ship arms to rebels in Cuba. We All Have Secrets is a 2019 Royal Palm Literary Awards finalist.

“Whether you’re putting your stuff out there on your own or sending it out into the world of agents and publishers, you need to have your work as close to perfect as humanly possible. I’ve worked with Elizabeth on over a dozen published books. Each time, I found her to be extremely professional, timely and she provided a great knowledge of the genre of crime fiction, as well as fixed my grammatical travesties. I could go with any number of people to correct my spelling, but Elizabeth gives my writing a bit more that I feel really helps push it to its final stage.” — Mike McCrary

The Facts and Fictions of No Salvation by Jeffery Hess

I have the pleasure of knowing Jeff Hess as a friend, and the honor of working with him as an editor. Jeff is here today because his latest novel, No Salvation, is out now from Down & Out Books. Given my involvement with the book it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to review it, but I’m more than happy to turn the floor over to Jeff to talk about the process of deciding how to blend enough fact to be grounded in the historical events that inspired No Salvation with enough fiction to tell the story he wanted to tell.

That’ll Be The Day

It was a pleasure to work with S.W. Lauden on That’ll Be The Day: A Power Pop Heist, which features the Sharp brothers: power pop fans, musicians, and reluctant thieves.

“At some point in the revision process, writers inevitably lose sight of the words they’ve written. The sharp eye and mind of Elizabeth White can help you see your work anew. She tells you where you’ve done your job well, and where you’ve made a mess of things—story notes, line edits, fact checking, you name it. And all this feedback comes with the vibe of a smart friend who gets what you’re doing.” — Jeff Hess

BadThings

Bad Things

It was a pleasure to work with Jasper Tripp on his science fiction/dark humor novel Bad Things, which finds Police Chief Dibs dealing with more than he bargained for when he left NYC for the sleepy heartland town of Stagstone. As irregularities mount and townspeople begin to disappear, Dibs finds himself aligned with a family of doomsday preppers in a fight against an alien invasion. If Stagstone falls, it will be the first domino in the downfall of all humanity. Are Dibs and his ragtag crew up to the task?
